An Augustinian, he studied at Paris and under Lanfranc at Bec, about 1078, became provost of the canons regular of St. Quentin, as Beauvais, France and in 1091 became bishop of Chartres. He was a counselor to King Philip, attacked the greed of contemporary churchmen was imprisoned for a time for opposing Philips plan in 1092 to desert his wife Bertha and marry Bertrade of Anjou. Ivo played a prominent role in the investiture dispute advocating a policy of moderation for both sides and wrote widely on canon law. His Decretum, had great influence and his letters are a valuable reflection of his era.
