Cowabunga dude! California to decide Republican nominee

Likelihood of brokered convention is growing.

The Republican nomination will almost certainly come down to California, which votes on June 7. According to early polls, Donald Trump has a slight lead, but it is narrow enough the state, and its decisive haul of 172 Republican delegates, is up for grabs.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Donald Trump has his work cut out for him. He may be the Republican frontrunner, but that doesn't mean he will secure the total number of delegates to lock down the nomination. Without reaching the magic number of 1,237 delegates, the Republicans will have an open convention where they party's elites can nominate anyone they choose, including Mitt Romney, who is considered a party favorite.

The implications of the Republican party rejecting the popular majority's choice will remain to be seen, but it might not be positive for the GOP. Nonetheless, if Trump doesn't lock down the nomination, this is what could happen.

Close behind Trump in the state is Ted Cruz. With the departure of Marco Rubio, it is believed most of the young senator's supporters will switch to supporting Ted Cruz. This could tip the state in the Texan's favor.

This is why Trump will need to work very hard to win California.

Californians can expect the candidates to swing up and down the state, likely more than once, making whirlwind stops in their hometowns. San Diego, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno, Sacrament, San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and several other cities will be visited by the dueling frontrunners.

It is impossible to predict how California will vote, but if the state does not go decisively for Trump, a contested convention will result and anything could happen. Anyone could emerge as the nominee.

California will vote on June 7. Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota will also vote, but they will be dwarfed by California.
